Brendan Howlin has insisted that the Government is not pursuing an
austerity strategy, despite the claims by critics. In an op-ed in this
morning's Irish Times, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform
has said that the state needs to deal with "catastrophic deficit".
Howlin was responding to a letter in last week's Irish Times (here) by leading economiststhat claimed that austerity-driven policies would lead to further unemployment as the economy contradicted.
